The Paradox of Running: Taking It Seriously, But Not Too Seriously
Every runner knows the feeling. The buzz of a race morning. Nerves on edge. Laces double-knotted. That quiet conversation in your head getting you dialed in.
For some, it's about chasing a PB. Proof that the hours, the sweat, the struggle, all meant something.
For others, it’s about soaking up the moment. Running through the sunrise. High-fiving a stranger. Being part of something that feels magnificent.
Both matter. But here’s the thing that experienced runners learn eventually:
If you take running too seriously, you’ll squeeze the joy out of it…
… BUT, if you don’t take it seriously enough, you’ll never see what you’re capable of.
The sweet spot?
A down-to-earth mindset.
Let’s talk about what it is, and some strategies to achieve it.
Zoom In When It Counts. Zoom Out When It Matters.
Racing and training demand focus. That’s non-negotiable. You need to show up, put in the work, and be willing to lean into discomfort.
No one drifts into greatness.
But the line between committed and obsessed? It’s razor-thin.
When you're too deep in the data, too wrapped up in the outcome, it's easy to lose sight of the joy. You forget why you started. You push past signals your body is begging you to hear. And you burn out.
That’s where perspective saves you. The ability to zoom out, soften the grip, and see the bigger picture.
It’s easier said than done, sure. But it’s a practice, just like intervals or long runs. And it starts with reconnecting to the joy.
Embrace the Fun
When performance isn’t the only thing on your mind, you start noticing more.
The light through the trees. The sound of your breath. The strangers who smile as you pass.
You laugh more. You stress less. You stop running to something, and start running with something.
That mindset doesn’t just make running more fun, it makes you more durable.
When setbacks hit (and they will), you bounce back quicker. You take the loss, you learn from it, and you move on with your head still high.
Down-To-Earth Mindset Tools That Keep You Grounded
🟢 Focus on the Journey
Tracking progress is great, but don’t let it become a prison. Shift your attention to the process.
The effort you put in, the lessons learned, the person you’re becoming in the grind.
🟢 Practice Presence
Instead of obsessing over pace every kilometre, try feeling your way through a run.
Tune into your breath. Feel the road under your feet. Let your mind be where your body is.
🟢 Drop the Pressure
You’re allowed to have off days. You’re allowed to miss goals.
The best runners know when to push and when to pivot. That’s not weakness, that’s wisdom.
🟢 Celebrate the Little Wins
Not every run has to be epic.
Some days the win is just lacing up and getting out there.
Don’t overlook that. It counts.
The Power of Perspective
The paradox of running is this:
The more you let go of needing it to be perfect, the more you actually grow.
The more you enjoy the ride, the further you go.
And when you show up on race day with that balance in your bones, disciplined but not desperate, you run free.
So the next time you’re out there chasing a goal, just remember...
Take it seriously. Train like you mean it.
But don’t forget to smile mid-run, wave at a kid, or stop to catch the sunset.
That’s what a down-to-earth mindset is.
And that’s what keeps runners true to their craft.
Now it’s your turn.
Have a look at your own approach to running.
Are you someone who could benefit from zooming out a little?
Or are you overdue to dial it back in and take your training seriously again?
There’s usually something obvious once you pause to look.
